IDA Ireland and Enterprise Ireland hosted their second Enterprise Excellence event 
IDA Ireland and Enterprise Ireland hosted their second Enterprise Excellence event – Lean in Ireland Event in Athlone on 30th March.

Anne Lanigan, Enterprise Ireland Brexit Manager, spoke about how Brexit is the most significant challenge to Irish companies in the last 50 years and how Enterprise Ireland is there to support companies in Competitiveness, Innovation and R&D, Expanding Reach and Financial Management. Anne explained how Enterprise Ireland is encouraging companies to prepare for a hard Brexit and that companies should plan now. Improving Competitiveness is a key element of the Brexit approach.

Mike Devaney, Enterprise Ireland, and Gerard O’Connor, IDA, spoke about the Lean & green supports that are available from the State Agencies to increase the competitiveness of both Indigenous and multi-national companies. Mike explained how the lean programme facilitates companies to bring in outside experts to give people the tools and techniques to make improvements and reduce waste.

Three case studies were presented; 

William Egenton, Managing Director, Dromore Engineering,William Egenton, Managing Director, Dromore Engineering, Old Castle, Co. WestMeath, explained how the implementation of lean principles drives exceptional performance in all areas of their business. He spoke of the importance of believing in lean and how new challenges/problems can strengthen the business. 

Ciaran Sheerin, Vention MedicalCiaran Sheerin, Area Owner Manufacturing Engineer, of Vention Medical, in Boyle, Co. Roscommon, spoke about their approach to lean, how problems are viewed as opportunities, and how lean can be used as a key selling point in the supply chain, for existing customers and for new business. 

Declan Connolly, Operational Excellence, Boston ScientificDeclan Connolly
, Operational Excellence, Boston Scientific, Clonmel, Co.Tipperary, spoke about his 25 years’ experience of leadership roles in different sectors and the importance of sustaining continuous improvement. Declan explained how lean principles, tools and techniques drive the right behaviours to generate great results and a faster more innovation winning company. Boston Scientific Cork was awarded the prestigious Shingo award, in 2016
